chapter  7
Electoral Campaigning in Latin America’s New Democracies: The Southern Cone
Pages 17

Electoral campaigning is an essential part of political communication, going well beyond the development and implementation of media strategies at election time. It is a complex process of political socialization that ranges from interpersonal exchanges and advocacy (Worcester & Mortimore 2001:137) to the role played by political parties and the media as sources of political culture. This chapter focuses on political campaigning as part of the consolidation of Latin American new democracies, specifically comparing recent campaigns in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.1
