ABSTRACT

When students experience difficulties in literacy acquisition it is clear that teachers and schools alone are unlikely to be able to address every individual learning need. In considering what it would take to mobilise more people and resources to support students’ learning, it is important to recognise the potential for involving others as partners in the educational process, most notably parents and carers. Furthermore, as noted in previous chapters, one of the most significant issues raised by an awareness of cultural aspects of literacy is the importance of acknowledging the relationship between family and literacy in teaching practices and in the school context. It is crucial that educators have a clear view of how families and schools can work together to establish home-school links to support the learning of students who experience difficulties in literacy development in ways which take account of a diversity of family and cultural backgrounds.
