ABSTRACT
North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is one of Germany’s 16 federal states, and is situated in the heart of Europe, bordering on Belgium and the Netherlands. With a population of 17.8 million in 1994, NRW is the most densely populated federal state in Germany. It accounts for 22% of Germany’s total population.
