ABSTRACT

As director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Training program, Sam was considered an upbeat and enthusiastic individual who actively participated in group discussions and social functions. Over time, however, Sam appeared tired and irritable. His friendly smile disappeared and he became moody and temperamental. When a concerned colleague gently questioned Sam about this obvious behavior change, Sam became defensive and abruptly remarked, “People should worry about themselves.” In addition to withdrawing from collegial conversations, Sam would sardonically dismiss students who questioned his agitated behavior.
