Malaysia and Southeast Asia in Globalization
Although globalization applies to the entire world, it is useful to focus on a single country and region to detail and to highlight the many aspects and complexities of globalization processes that have been described and analyzed in previous chapters. To that end, this chapter concentrates on Malaysia, a Southeast Asian country that has enjoyed some of the advantages of globalization and suffered some of its unwanted consequences. Malaysia offers examples of both insertion in and cooperation with the international political economy and resistance to unwelcome pressures. The country has demonstrated how politics drives economic activity as well as how the reciprocal effects of economics on politics shape national life.
