ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 contains the basic ingredients for defining preventive counseling and for conducting it. “Preventive counseling is used to help people become empowered in systems. It applies a broad range of counseling methods. Its application can lead to problem avoidance, reversing the trajectory of new problems; optimal human functioning; and people’s ability to become their own preventive agents.” It is hoped that both this definition and the preventive counseling model will contribute to a better understanding of what this type of counseling is and will provide a useful kind of road map in guiding future action.
