ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe the unique issues that are relevant to individuals with dual diagnosis for both entrance into and maintenance of employment. First, we discuss challenges in defining and measuring dual diagnosis and review the rates of dual psychiatric and substance-use disorders in community and workplace samples. Second, we discuss the impact of dual diagnosis on workplace functioning. Finally, we review a range of issues related to dual diagnosis in the workplace and provide suggestions for recognizing, treating, and referring these individuals within the context of the employment environment.
