ABSTRACT

I believe that this is one of the great periods in psychoanalysis. Our scientific discourse is livelier, more informed, more diverse, and less embittered than at any other time in my memory. We are discussing ideas that not so many years ago would not have been discussed seriously within mainstream psychoanalysis; and we are doing so, and I believe will continue to do so,without further danger of split or fragmentation. I think psychoanalysis in America has reached a point of scientific health and maturity that allows for stress and change without danger and loss of our self-cohesion.We owe much of this present excitement to the work of Dr Kohut and his followers.
