ABSTRACT
Most of us who spend at least part of our professional lives trying to understand human memory were initially brought up on a very different tradition than that described above of what memory research was all about. We were brought up on a tradition of nonsense syllables, and word lists, and if we were good an occasional bedtime story. Indeed, one of us (JML) still spends most of his time with such materials and enjoys doing so (it beats working).
