Beyond Assimilation: Toward a Broader View of Stereotyping Effects 1

The previous chapter reviewed models and research on social stereotyping and touched briefly on a perspective that has guided much of my own research—the shifting standards model. In this chapter, I attempt a broader overview of my own work in this area. The general theme, reflected in the title, is that stereotyping effects should be thought of as more than assimilation effects.
