The headteacher making this comment was leader of one of the most innovative schools in terms of information and communications technology (ICT) in England, where all teachers had laptops and ICT use was integrated across the curriculum (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development [OECD], 2002). Your pupils can expect to work in environments where familiarity with the use of computers is taken for granted and a high level of skill is expected. There can be few occupations now which are unaffected by ICT – records are kept on computer, equipment and supplies are ordered by internet and so on. Integrating appropriate forms of e-learning into the learning environment is a major challenge for all twenty-first-century teachers. But what is e-learning and how does it link with ICT?
