ABSTRACT

By returning to the metaphorical roots of human distress, the Tidal Model offers a radical alternative to traditional psychiatric care. Mental health services are often so focused on hypothetical constructs of illness and disorder that the person who experiences these hypothetical states is lost from view. The Tidal Model refocuses attention on the person, the person’s experience of distress, and the person’s appreciation of what needs to be done to address the immediate problems of living. The radical focus of the Tidal Model relocates the person at the heart of the caring process.
