ABSTRACT

When we began our own Tidal voyage almost ten years ago, recovery was rarely discussed in mainstream mental health care, and even less understood. In 2003, as we sat down to write this book, ‘recovery’ seemed to be on everyone’s lips, if only for the purpose of paying lip service. It has become the flavour of the month, the most popular buzzword, the phrase that might guarantee us entry to the most celebrated mental health circles, and which definitely must be mentioned in the next conference presentation, the next departmental memo, and the next invitation extended to the local user/consumer groups.
