ABSTRACT

I was called to the hospital for a consult on a woman who my friend and fellow physician, Bill Cook, said he had admitted because she was "losing her skin." Bill was the primary care doctor for the 28-year-old woman, named Mary. He told me she had come to his office with the sudden onset of skin peeling, weakness, and painful and irritated eyes and mouth. From his description, I had an idea of Mary's disease, and made my way to see her prior to my morning office hours.
