ABSTRACT
All orthodoxies decay. This is as true of scholarship as it is of politics and religion. No branch of knowledge – no theory, no body of fact – is immune to the almost organic eventualities of decline and fall. In the natural and social sciences, decaying orthodoxies give birth to paradigm revolutions. In painting and the humanities, the shock of the new delivers the creative deathblow.
