ABSTRACT

The Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) was the first and is the largest of the fourteen prisons in the Washington State Department of Corrections. It is located in southeastern Washington in the city of Walla Walla on approximately 580 acres of land. There are 553 security staff, 293 support staff, and 33 persons employed by the Division of Correctional Industries, bringing the total employment for WSP to just under 900. The annual payroll for the penitentiary for the fiscal year ending 30 June 1994 was almost thirty-five million dollars, including salary and benefits. The current superintendent of the penitentiary, Tana Wood, is the first woman to head this adult men’s correctional facility.
