ABSTRACT

The term ‘polyp’ describes any elevation above the mucosal surface. They can be either sessile or pedunculated and may be single or multiple. They are broadly categorized, histologically, as either neoplastic (benign or malignant) or nonneoplastic. Neoplastic polyps are usually larger with a more erythematous surface than non-neoplastic polyps; however, these macroscopic features are unreliable and all polyps should be biopsied.
