ABSTRACT

The causes of jaundice may be classified into three broad categories. In practice, however, hepatic and cholestatic causes frequently coexist.

1. Prehepatic. This is usually Gilbert’s disease or haemolysis (e.g. due to hereditary spherocytosis, sickle cell disease). It is characterized by an unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia, normal liver enzymes and absent urinary bilirubin.
