ABSTRACT

Normal pregnancy results in mild, benign cholestasis. ALP levels are moderately elevated (mostly of placental origin), but bilirubin, transaminase and GGT levels are normal. Jaundice in pregnancy is either due to a condition unique to pregnancy (as discussed here) or is caused by an intercurrent process (e.g. gallstones or viral hepatitis).
