ABSTRACT
Oesophageal motility disorders may be either primary or secondary. Primary disorders include achalasia and diffuse oesophageal spasm. Secondary
causes are numerous and include connective tissue diseases (particularly systemic sclerosis), neurological diseases (cerebrovascular accident, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis), primary muscular diseases (myasthenia gravis, myotonic dystrophy) and neuropathies (diabetes, alcohol).
