ABSTRACT

The number of patients eligible for, and receiving, liver transplants is increasing yearly. With little change in the number of donors, waiting lists extend and an examination of the selection criteria becomes necessary. The 1-year survival for elective transplants in low-risk patients is now approximately 90%. This level has been reached due to improvements in patient selection, surgical techniques, postoperative care, immunosuppressant regimens, and a greater tendency to retransplant in the event of complications.
