ABSTRACT

Bloody diarrhoea (often with mucus), with or without colicky abdominal pain, is the main symptom. Symptoms are usually present for weeks or months before

presentation, but they may be acute and mimic infective colitis (which itself can trigger an attack). Proctitis results in fresh rectal bleeding, tenesmus and faecal incontinence. In proctitis, constipation can be prominent.
