ABSTRACT
Many disorders may cause fits in the neonatal period, the commonest being perinatal asphyxia, metabolic derangements and meningitis. Asphyxia due to disturbances in fetal circulation and lack of oxygen during labour may lead to hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy in the first few days of life, and this is a major cause of death and neurological disability.
