ABSTRACT

In this chapter I concentrate on a number of home pages that all represent the Naqshbandi order, particularly in the Western hemisphere. I describe the content of the home pages and I discuss what appear to be their goals and ambitions. How do the pages, for example, relate to the rest of the global Muslim community (umma) and the various interpretations of Islam’s message that can be found within this community? One aspect that I give primary attendance to is how the charismatic role traditionally granted the Sufi sheikh is negotiated in the social spaces that the Internet creates.
