ABSTRACT

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first

described as a clinical entity at the beginning of the 1980s.

During 2006 around 4 million adults and children became

infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the

virus that causes AIDS. By the end of the year, an estimated

39.5 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS.

The year also saw around 3 million deaths from AIDS,
