ABSTRACT

It is an interesting exercise to take the concept of transcoding and (as we have done with the automated, numerical, modular and variable qualities of new media) also use this as a lens through which to look at the dialectic between museums and computers over the past forty years. In this context, our concern here will largely be with the concept of ‘change’, specifi cally the extent to which the institution of the museum resisted or allowed technology to shape its organisation and vision. Did museums, in other words, resist or pursue change in the face of technological innovation – and, more importantly, why?
