ABSTRACT
The historical development of the Ptolemaic kingdom can be divided into three periods to which the three parts of this book correspond. The first period, the beginning and the golden age of Ptolemaic rule, begins with Alexander the Great and ends with the death of the third Ptolemy (332–222). The historical significance of this period was that it saw the formation of a kingdom which would become the foremost power in the eastern Mediterranean basin.
