ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the combined efforts of two linked non-governmen-tal organisations (NGOs), namely the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands Conservation Project (HNWCP), to protect a wetlands area in northern Nigeria. An important aspect of these efforts was a campaign to prevent the construction, or at least reduce the impact, of a major new dam at Kafin Zaki that threatened the existence of the wetlands.
