ABSTRACT

Sinéad O’Connor enjoyed considerable celebrity towards the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. Via four intense emotional albums, a series of equally passionate stage performances and some controversial media appearances she provoked strong reactions of both support and condemnation. Through her sounds, words and images she continually drew attention to social injustice and raised questions about Irishness, religion, racism, sexuality, childhood and motherhood.
