Changes within the environmental movement and in the character or management of Friends of the Earth were not - of course - the only kinds of change that determined the course of environmental action and debate in the Britain of the 1970s. As always, those events had mainly been driven on by changes in the complexion of political affairs, by stories that made news regardless of anything pocket-sized pressure groups did, and by undercurrents in the culture of the day.
