Boom and bust was almost endemic to FoE's financial situation, like population cycles in nature. The Board thought they wanted this calm manager type who'd allow everyone's talents to flourish. That would allow sustainable growth to happen and make the machinery work again. What I think they really wanted was a charismatic figure who'd stand up and do what Jonathon did, maintain a high public profile and handle the Andrew Lees types within. And that David never was, he wasn't expected to be. He was absolutely competent, had a degree in chemistry, knew how to campaign and how to manage. But that pressure-cooker culture in head office was something else, it really didn't suit him. I think it made his life pretty miserable.
