Academic business education in European countries should be understood as a product of its own history. Our view of the present system of academic business education in the Netherlands, in the form of the new discipline of bedriffskunde (business studies), rests on this assumption. The American idea of a business school and the related ideas of a science of management and a profession of management were received after the Second World War in an existing context of business education, which had been developed in the interwar period.
