ABSTRACT

Reflecting on the currency crisis in 1997–98, this paper explores the possibility of establishing a more resilient exchange rate arrangement for the East Asian emerging market economies. In particular, it proposes a currency basket system based on the US dollar, the Japanese yen and the euro, the region's critical partner currencies for trade and foreign direct investment (FDI).
