ABSTRACT

In today’s technological societies, access to further education and labour opportunities depends largely on the attainment of academic credits and qualifications. Educational systems thus act as a selection mechanism from the moment they establish the type and amount of knowledge and skills students must master. The criteria used to evaluate this knowledge are of great importance, as they will determine the degree of acquisition of these skills and the qualifications required in order to access higher education, the world of work, and vocational education (Tomlinson 1994).
