ABSTRACT

“The exemplary as a medium for teaching”–this is the concept I endeavor to define in the following pages. Although the concept applies to all disciplines, many of my illustrations and examples are taken from physics, because this is the field I know best. First I define the exemplary by comparing and contrasting it with other related and unrelated approaches; then I address the following question: If we seek to educate (bilden), in what sense can we regard an object, a theme, a problem within a subject area as “exemplary,” and to what end?
