ABSTRACT

By communality I mean the sum of the feelings and actions of several individuals that promote and express their simultaneous belonging to the same group. Communality is greatly facilitated when people are gathered into the same place. Consumer capitalism disintegrates the emotional wholeness of communality. In our large-scale societies the intense emotion that may be generated by a gathering of people into the same place can seem strangely insignificant and powerless, for significance and power always seem to be elsewhere.
