ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the development of fiscal policy in New Zealand in the past thirty years. There have been two distinct episodes in fiscal policy over this period: 1970-84 and 1984-present. For this reason, the discussion has been structured along chronological lines. The second section outlines the broad historical trends in fiscal policy prior to 1970, and then fiscal policy from 1970-84. The third section discusses events of 1984 and the fourth section covers the period from 1984 to the present. The final two sections discuss some fiscal policy legislation and issues that relate to fiscal policy in New Zealand today.
