ABSTRACT

One of the core issues concerning the power of television as a communicating medium is the ready accessibility on a daily basis of programmes targeting all interest and age groups. Indeed the range and scope of programmes seem almost limitless, boosted further in recent years with the addition of cable and satellite television providers. There appears to be something for everybody with specific time schedules and programme types geared towards different audiences. There are numerous factors playing a part in how we interact with TV and the subsequent understanding taken away. It may depend to a large extent upon whether we are seeking to be entertained or educated, our levels of interest, as well as the type of programme genre we are watching. Our viewing habits will also play a part with programmes being watched either with full or partial attention. We may be selective, choosing programmes which appeal to us be it one-off shows or serialisations, or alternatively leaving the television on in the background to accompany mundane household chores.
