ABSTRACT

I want to explore some of the problems at the heart of our notion of ‘taste’ by using as a starting-point a series of normally biennial lectures (the Discourses) delivered by Sir Joshua Reynolds to students of the Royal Academy of Arts, starting at the official opening of the Academy in 1769, and ending in 1790, two years before his death.
