ABSTRACT

Given the arguments so far expressed, it would seem that today’s consumer society represents a greatly impoverished way of life. This sense of impoverishment appears to stem from the commodity-form. Whether we consider it in its guise as an artificial accelerator or manipulator of consumer needs, the mask hiding the expropriation of value by one class at the expense of another, as an object that denies humanity’s spiritual lifeenergies, or as that ideological agent contributing towards a pacific and depoliticised populous, the commodity is seen to be no less than a tyrannous object.
