JAN ZITA GROVER You’ve addressed illness in your artwork for close to a decade now. How did you get started with this project?
JO SPENCE I’ve had three major illnesses, so perhaps I ought to mention them all. From the age of 12, I’ve had chronic asthma, but it would never have occurred to me in a million years to make it the subject of any artwork. I learned that it was something that people didn’t want to know about, and I hid it. I simply naturalized and normalized the illness and never gave it a thought….
