ABSTRACT

SAARIKOSKI, Pentti ( 1 937 -83). Writer, poet, translator. Saarikoski became a legend in his time as a cultural radical and a leading figure of Finnish modernism. Alongside his own writing, he produced many translations of Greek classics (notably Homer's Odyssey) and modern prose (for example Salinger, Joyce, Bellow. Miller). His translation of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye into Helsinki slang was a sensational success. Some of his translations reflect the norm-breaking ideas of Ezra POUND (see AMERICAN TRADIDON), who was a major influence on Saarikoski's work.
