ABSTRACT

The work done in my unit involves the treatment of couples using the behaviouralsystems approach (Crowe and Ridley, 1990). This is a practical and eclectic method based partly on behavioural couple therapy (Stuart, 1980) and partly on systemic concepts and techniques (Minuchin, 1974; Selvini et al., 1978). The approach contains in itself a number of options for different therapeutic strategies, and the assessments which occur during the process of therapy are mainly directed to the choice of strategy for a particular case and only partly to the more familiar question of whether to take on a couple for treatment.
