But surely, for all that, is there not a self to whom the usefulness of any knowledge or understanding has ultimately to be referred; a person who wants to know, or doesn’t want to know, who persuades, argues, controls, is mistaken, dominated, ignorant or wise; whose character represents the consistent organizing factors in the behaviour of each of us; who reconciles different sorts of meanings in a unified personal understanding?
