ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the approach to regeneration and conservation adopted in two historic areas in the Arab world. The two localities are the Ottoman city of Salt in Jordan, and the merchant quarter of Dubai known as the Bastakia. In both, tourism played an important part in the strategy for renewal and recovery.
