ABSTRACT

In 1992, a tiny majority of the Danish electorate voted against full membership in the European Union. This happened in spite of the fact that almost the entire Danish political establishment and practically all Danish news media supported the European Union. A year later, in a second referendum, a somewhat larger, but still quite small majority voted for the Union, provoking, among other responses, unprecedented riots in the streets of Copenhagen when the result was reported as news. For once, Denmark thus made it into the headlines of major news media in other countries, and even live coverage of the riots on CNN.
