ABSTRACT

It is a great privilege to have worked with David Goldberg over the last 13 years or so. When I was developing my Mental Health Foundation research fellowship protocol in 1984 I went to see him in Manchester and immediately felt welcomed and encouraged to study the recognition of depression by GPs. Incidentally, he also introduced me to his research fellow working on the training of GPs, Linda Gask with whom I have also worked closely ever since. David Goldberg has inspired countless other researchers and teachers similarly over the years and continues to support me in my efforts to develop whole-team, primary-care skills-based training at the Institute of Psychiatry. He also inspires many of the participants on my courses with the microskills needed to work with patients who somatise their distress.
