ABSTRACT

A core issue is the degree to which a counsellor’s values should enter into a therapeutic relationship. As counsellors, we are often taught not to let our values show, lest they bias the direction clients are likely to take. Yet we are simply not value-neutral, nor are we value-free; our therapeutic interventions rest on core values. Although our values do influence the way we practise, it is possible to maintain a sense of objectivity.
