ABSTRACT

The term culture is generally used to refer to the customary beliefs, traits and social norms of racial, religious or social groups. In many ways our culture defines our boundaries and sets limits between our surroundings and ourselves. It allows us a sense of belonging, a collective ‘specialness’ that we take pride in and will fight and even make sacrifices for. However many aspects of culture are based on principles or doctrines that we are born into, that we never really question or challenge. Some are static and unchanging, others are dynamic and vary according to time and place; ultimately however, they serve to contribute to our definition of who we are and how we relate to those around us.
