ABSTRACT

Counselling and psychotherapy as ‘vocations’ both have widely held premises that are based upon the ‘western idea’. In the west, we focus on the ‘individual’ and the notion that a ‘greater self-awareness’ is generally seen as a ‘good thing’ to strive for. Our society actively encourages people into relationships between a client and their counsellor therapist, a one-to-one relationship thought to alleviate emotional distress, and various other human challenges associated with living and working in Europe.
